9 Steps to Build a Successful Affiliate Marketing Business

Affiliate marketing… if you’ve been searching for a way to make an income from the internet then you probably have heard that term a few times by now. And that’s for a good reason. Affiliate marketing truly is one of the best ways to build a business online, So it’s no secret that many people talk about it since its inception in the mid-90s.

If you have no idea what affiliate marketing is, then go read this in-depth article on what is affiliate marketing and come back.

If you have already started or dabbed in affiliate marketing but not quite sure how to go about it or what steps you are missing to make that first $50 or $100, then I’m going to show you the 9 steps you need to build a successful affiliate marketing business. Let’s get right into it.

Step 1: Learn What You Are Getting Into

Yes, affiliate marketing is the best way to get into building an online business for just about anyone. It is easy, once you know what you are doing, it is also sooo much cheaper compared to starting a physical business. In fact, it’s peanuts compared to the expenses of an offline business. Yet, it can be very very lucrative

That being said. Not all people doing affiliate marketing is rich. Why is that? Actually, the number of people doing affiliate marketing and actually making a decent sum of money is on the low side.

The reason for that is: Not everyone doing affiliate marketing is doing it the right way.

Like any offline business. Before you get into it, you have to learn the ins and outs of affiliate marketing. This means for a start reading the in-depth guide I recommended above if this your first time learning about affiliate marketing.

Then, check my step 9, as this is the major reason behind my success with affiliate marketing. I left my best tip for lucky last.

Step 2: Treat it Like a Business

Oh yeah, guys, if you want to make some serious dollars with affiliate marketing then you can’t treat this like something you are going to “try”.

This is where a lot of people fail. A lot of people fail to understand that, if you come into affiliate marketing thinking it’s “easy money”. Then you are so wrong. It can be easy money down the track when you are 1 or 2 or 3 years in the business. Once you actually know what you are doing. In the beginning, you have to do a lot of learning and applying.

This is true with any business. There’s nothing called easy money. If you put in the work, you’ll reap the rewards. And the rewards are delicious 🙂

Step 3: Decide on The Right Niche

OK, I wonder how many people I lost from step 1 and step 2. Now for all the hard-workers who made it to step 3, Congratulations 😛

I remember deciding on my first niche. Oh… it was so difficult. Not because I couldn’t think of a niche but I just couldn’t decide on one. I had so many ideas. I was looking for the “perfect” niche.

Spoiler Alert: There’s no such thing as a perfect niche.

All niches can be profitable. Sure, some niches can be more profitable than others. Unless you have been mastering the art of affiliate marketing for the last 5 years then give up on finding the most profitable niche to make your first $100. Take everything step by step. This is not a race. So don’t treat it like one.

3 Mistakes I Made When Choosing My First Niche

  • I took too long to decide on my first niche
  • I chose a niche thinking about profitability
  • It was too broad.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is choosing the wrong niche. And I don’t even mean there are wrong niches out there. What I mean is choosing a niche that you will not enjoy working in. I started on a niche because I thought it will pay me the biggest paycheck. Big mistake! People, choose a niche that you will enjoy working with day in and day out.

Also, remember to narrow down your niche selections. You can’t choose niches like: “weight loss for women”. Try something like… “weight loss for women post-pregnancy”. You can narrow it down even more by “weight loss for 40+ women post-pregnancy”

You don’t want to narrow it down to a point where you have nothing much to talk about, but It should be narrow enough so that a new website like yours will rank faster.

2 Tips For Choosing Your Niche

  • If you are struggling to think of niches. You can use The Directory of the Web to help you find a niche.
  • Always choose a niche that you are passionate about. You don’t want to get bored with your niche. This is important.

Step 4: See What Affiliate Programs Are Available

Affiliate programs are partnerships between you and a merchant to sell their products with special affiliate links that credit you with a commission if people buy through that link.

Finding an affiliate program is the easiest step of this 9 step guide.

So, how do you look for affiliate programs in your chosen niche?

Just type “Your Niche + Affiliate program” into google and look through the first page. I’m sure whatever you’re trying to sell, there is always an affiliate program for it.

So for example if your niche is “iPhone X Cases” type “iPhone X Cases + Affiliate program”

There are some popular places where a lot of affiliates sign up and make money with. Some of them I will list them below:

Amazon has one of the biggest affiliate programs. They have every product under the sun and a lot of affiliates make use of their programs to rake in a lot of $$$.

ShareASale also has one of the leading affiliate programs. At this time, they have 3900+ merchants to choose from when you join their program. As always go and see if they have products that you can promote within your niche

Clickbank is the company to join if you are looking for digital products within almost any niche. With Clickbank, you have to check for the quality of the product as some of the products they have can be of low quality. They do have some gems also. So, it’s always worth having a look.

Step 5: Visualize What Products You Are Going to Promote And How

Just before you run out and choose the company and products that pay the highest commissions, you have to visualize in your head, how you are going to build your site up and how you are going to incorporate the promotions within your site.

OK, I know this can be confusing if you’re a newbie that has no idea about what I’m talking about.

Basically, any business either physical or online requires a business plan. You can’t just “wing it”. It can work sometimes but for most people that will not work.

Think about how you are going to build your website. What products you are going to add. Look at other websites within your niche to get an idea of how they promote their products.

Remember you are only doing that to get an inspiration or an idea on how to build your site. You don’t want to build your site exactly like someone else. That is wrong. And you definitely shouldn’t do that.

Step 6: Build A Website

Well, If I haven’t made it clear when I mentioned the word “website” in the above steps, then yes, you definitely need a website nowadays to succeed as an affiliate marketer.

Sure, there are some people that may successfully do affiliate marketing without a website like, Youtubers. But I’m not talking about creating videos here.

If you haven’t built your first website yet, don’t be scared. It literally takes 30 seconds. I promise.

There was a time where building a website meant a complicated process that requires specialist knowledge of code languages like HTML.

Gone are those days. Now even a 10-year-old can build a professional looking website in like 10 mouse clicks.

Step 7: Create Quality Content That People Will Enjoy Reading

Ah, finally… we are here ready to talk about content. What is the content?

Well, for an affiliate marketer, content means everything.

Have you heard the saying “Content is King”?

Yes ladies and gentlemen, You have to be willing to write content for your website for you to succeed with affiliate marketing.

You didn’t think people are going to buy things from an empty side, did you?

Writing content means, writing about your chosen niche. It can be about anything. As long as it is related to the niche you have chosen. Within all your content, you should also focus on product reviews. That is reviews of products or services in your chosen niche that will solve a problem.

These product review posts are the money makers for your website. And a lot of affiliate marketers do product reviews to generate their income.

There are other strategies as well, product reviews aren’t the only method of generating an income, but it is the major source of income for the majority of affiliate marketers. I won’t touch on other methods in this article as you will learn everything with time. I want to keep this post beginner friendly for everyone

Step 8: Always be Genuine and Honest With Your Audience

Guys, this is a must if you are here for the long haul in this industry. You have to be honest in your posts and genuine.

Remember, you are building a brand. A good brand is always built on a solid foundation. Don’t try to make quick money now.

Always choose products based on their quality when choosing to promote them on your site. Not because they pay you the most dollars. We want to build a return customer base that wants to visit your site over and over again.

I find that being frank and saying it how it is, is the best way to grow a loyal following.

Step 9: Enrol in a Program to Learn About Affiliate Marketing

Time for the most important step of all.

You can’t possibly learn everything from searching from Google. If you are a beginner or someone that haven’t made a decent income from affiliate marketing yet then, this is the most important step to set you up for success.

Before I made my first dollar online, I joined a community that has people who are working towards the same goal as me. It also had a step-by-step course for a beginner to follow, and it provided with all the tools I needed as a beginner.

It’s that same community that I joined 9 years ago, is still the best place, in my opinion, to learn about affiliate marketing.

And you know what? I’m still part of that community to this day.

The relationships I’ve built over the years and the people there who happily helped me with newbie questions are the reasons why I’m still in this business.

And that place is called Wealthy Affiliate. Oh, And Did I mention that they have a free membership for you to see what they offer inside? 🙂

Here we are at the end of my 9 steps to build a successful affiliate marketing business. If you made it to my conclusion then you are a true trooper… I can see you are serious about making this work. Hopefully, I didn’t complicate things for you 😀

Affiliate marketing can be incredibly lucrative. You can be making money while you sleep. It is on 24/7. To get there, you need to do a few things. But, imagine what an extra $1000 a month would do, what if you build a full-time income so you can quit your current job and just work from a laptop? You don’t have to listen to a boss. You are your own boss. The opportunities are endless.

To be honest, anyone can do this. Just a month ago I saw a 13-year-old kid making more than his dad from this. Do you catch my drift here? It’s not hard. People who succeed in this business aren’t holding any mathematics degrees, (Someone I’m sure will have that lol)

You don’t have to have any prior knowledge. You just have to focus and commit to it. That’s all.

I always say, before you decide on something, you at least have to give it a proper go. Get started on a free membership with the company that I learned from and still a member of.

See you inside. Don’t forget to say hi, I’m always happy to say hello and give you a helping hand to my followers.

Spread the love
